BABIES & KIDS

BABIES (0-2 Years)

We recommend simple, solid colors (like a plain white onesie) or even just a diaper. Avoid big logos, busy patterns, hats, or headbands that cover the face. Agencies want to see the baby clean and as-is. Do not use makeup or elaborate hair accessories. Schedule the shoot when the baby is well-rested and fed, typically 30–60 minutes after a nap or meal. The goal is to showcase a clear headshot, full body (showcasing baby’s build) and a personality shot!

GIRLS (2-12 YEARS)

Children are typically moved into the "kids" category once they reach age 2 and start wearing toddler and young children's sizes.

Toddlers (1–3 years): Often viewed as a sub-category or transition phase within both groups.
School-Age (5–12 years): This is considered the "core" of child modeling, often covering catalog, commercial, and family-oriented campaigns.
Look: Professional scouts prefer a "no-makeup" or very minimal makeup look. This allows the natural skin tone and facial structure to be the focus.
Simple Hairstyling: Hair should be clean and styled in a way that shows its natural texture. Being able to pull hair back to reveal the jawline and face shape is often required.
Neutral Clothing: Avoiding loud patterns, large logos, or heavy jewelry ensures that the focus remains on the model rather than the outfit. Simple, timeless pieces like a plain tee and denim are often suggested. Dresses, skirts, ensembles and denim.
Commercial vs. Editorial: Tests often include a mix of approachable "lifestyle" looks (suitable for retail brands) and more structured, minimalist "fashion" looks to show range.

Essentials

  • Plain T-Shirts and Tanks: Solid-colored, well-fitted tees in neutral colors (white, black, gray) or soft gemstone tones (soft blue, pink) are industry staples. Avoid turtlenecks; instead, opt for scoop or crew necks to frame the face.

  • Fitted Denim: A pair of clean, well-fitting blue or black jeans is a must. Avoid overly baggy, distressed, or "bedazzled" denim that distracts from the model’s build.

  • Simple Dresses: Choose timeless, A-line or simple-cut dresses. Avoid heavy tulle, sparkles, or busy floral patterns that can appear dated.

  • Layering Basics: Jean jackets, cardigans, and simple button-downs are excellent for adding variety to a shoot without a full outfit change.

  • Athleisure/Activewear: For older children (ages 8–12), include simple leggings and a sporty top to show versatility for fitness-oriented commercial brands.

  • Undergarments: Always bring nude-colored, seamless undergarments to ensure no visible lines under clothing.

What to Avoid

  • Logos and Graphics: Do not wear clothing with large brand names, cartoon characters, or slogans, as these can create licensing issues and distract casting directors.

  • Neon Colors: Avoid fluorescent or neon shades, which can cast unflattering colors onto the child's skin and are difficult to photograph accurately.

  • Oversized Clothing: Do not buy clothing for the child to "grow into." Photoshoots require perfectly fitted or even slightly snug clothing to show the child's true proportions.

Footwear

  • Clean Sneakers: Classic, simple sneakers like Vans or plain white Keds are highly recommended.

  • Simple Flats or Boots: Ballet flats for a dressy look or clean combat boots for an "edgy" commercial look add variety to the portfolio.

BOYS (2-12 YEARS)

Essentials

  • Plain T-Shirts and Henleys: Solid, high-quality crew neck or V-neck tees in neutral colors (white, navy, grey) or bright commercial tones (soft blue, green). Avoid turtlenecks as they hide the neck and jawline.

  • Fitted Bottoms: A pair of classic dark denim jeans and neutral chinos (khaki or navy) are must-haves. For lifestyle shots, simple shorts in solid colors also work well.

  • Polos and Button-Downs: A crisp polo or a simple flannel/button-down shirt adds a "smart casual" or "upscale school" look.

  • Layering Pieces: Lightweight jackets (denim or windbreakers), cardigans, and simple hoodies help create different "looks" quickly.

  • Athletic Wear: If your child is sporty, include a clean activewear set (joggers and a tech tee) to show versatility for fitness brands.

What to Avoid

  • No Distractions: Avoid all large logos, cartoon characters, and neon colors. These distract from the face and can cause technical issues with lighting and licensing.

  • Neon Colors: Avoid fluorescent or neon shades, which can cast unflattering colors onto the child's skin and are difficult to photograph accurately.

  • Prioritize Perfect Fit: Do not dress them in "room to grow" sizes. Oversized or baggy clothes look messy on camera; clothes should be fitted or even one size smaller than usual for a sharp silhouette.

Footwear

  • Clean Footwear: Shoes must be spotless. Plain white sneakers (like Vans or Nike), classic loafers, or clean boots are the safest choices. Bare feet are also very popular for younger boys (ages 2–5) to create a natural feel.

MODEL DIGITALS

“Model digitals” are simple snapshots of the model in neutral clothing against a white or neutral background. Clients and agencies use them to get a sense of what the model looks like right now. Model digitals are sometimes referred to as “model polaroids” because before digital photography they would be taken on the spot with a polaroid camera. They can be taken by a professional photographer, but a polaroid shoot can be much more casual.

Some guidelines for Model Digitals and Model Polaroids, when working with us:

  • Background will be neutral or white with copious natural lighting. Don’t try to hide artfully in the shadows. It’s not that kind of shoot. Your session will be either in-studio or on-location depending which city you are booking your session for.

  • Wardrobe for fashion models should be form-fitting (for females/non-binary), neutral-colored or black jeans or leggings (for females/non-binary) and neutral-colored top. We always recommend black or white tops. Black or denim bottoms. For fitness or swimwear models, wear black swimwear that showcases your physique. You can also wear lingerie in place of swimwear as well. For males that have physiques for activewear, swimwear and underwear clients - shirtless is also an option for some of your shots. We recommend that you come bring several options for all of the above so we can help you decide if something is not working. Shoes should enhance your height so for those who identify as males please bring white sneakers or black options sneakers/boots . Those who identify as female please bring black or nude heels. Please come already dressed and ready to go.

  • No heavy makeup or hairstyling. Light makeup and concealer is fine. The goal isn’t to look perfect — it’s to look natural. Please make sure your nails are groomed with a natural or neutral color. Bright colors are distracting in digitals and not recommended.

  • Hydration is Key! Most of our digitals take place outside so be hydrated or feel free to bring water with you. It is important that your skin is hydrated to so please be sure to lotion your skin before shooting as we don’t wanna showcase any ashy limbs.

  • Grooming. Even though digitals are all natural beauty we still want you to look your best! If you have facial hair please groom it in the way that’s most flattering your appearance. If you look good fresh-faced even better, as some agencies prefer seeing your features without facial hair. For models showcasing swimwear or lingerie please groom body hair accordingly.

  • No Photoshop or airbrushing.  The only acceptable editing is to correct any distortion created by a wide-angle lens. You don’t want lensing to create an inaccurate representation of your figure.

  • Stay fresh! Make sure you use deodarant that does not leave a residue or color as it will show up in your photos and rub off on your clothes! We also highly recommend that you bring a towel just in case you sweat easily if your digital session is outdoors and translucent powder in case you get too shiny whether indoors or outdoors!

Models need several current model polaroids in their model portfolios at any given time, featuring different poses and different angles. The digitals can be taken in the same session with the same outfit; the goal is to show up-to-date images of the model in the most natural setting possible from different angles. Model digitals should be updated every few months; agencies may require their signed models to replenish the polaroids in their model portfolios on a regular basis. Agencies and clients may include specific requirements for model polaroids submitted to them. Please see the Model Digitals examples show below and on this link so that you can practice and prepare for your Model Polaroids.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Vivian will have some category recommendations based on your look. Please be sure to text, WhatsApp 917.945.2524 or email vivo@vivianvo.com each of the following: Close-up clearly showing your face without any filters. With or without makeup is fine. Full body photo - front, side and back. (A video is also acceptable.) If you did not provide your social media information during your booking please be sure to share as well so we can assess your features. Please also provide your sizes for tops, bottoms and dresses so we can also provide additional items from our wardrobe library if available in your size.

  1. Hair & Makeup/Grooming: Ladies please come with natural looking hair & makeup as it is important for the hair/makeup does not over power your features as that is what the casting directors will be looking at. For men please make sure your hair, facial hair and body hair are properly groomed. We recommend getting a haircut 1 to 2 weeks prior to your scheduled date. (7 days being the most recommended standard.) This allows the hair to grow out slightly, settling into a more natural look, avoiding the stiff or "too fresh" appearance of a same-day or day-before haircut. If you have added one of our professional artists for your session please refer to www.vivianvo.com/prep on how you should arrive skin and or hair wise. Nails should be natural and manicured.

  2. Wardrobe: Based off the images you sent us, we will send you some color recommendations that complement your personal season. Please use these colors as a guide (suggested) when going through your closet or while shopping for your looks. We highly recommend sending photos of you in the looks or a video of all of the options you are considering so that Vivian can audit and advise prior to your shoot. On the day of your shoot, we recommend bringing 2-3 options for each category so you have the option of switching out pieces if something is not translating through the lens. Make sure all shoewear is cleaned and carried in a bag or suitcase. All items should be pressed or steamed and carried in a garment bag to avoid wrinkles. Bring any other applicable accessories/props. Jewelry should be minimal for al looks and not distracting from your features except for editorial looks.
